The Dallas Reunion Tower – History

Photo : https://www.pexels.com/

I’ll try not to change it in to a huge history lesson, but there’s so much interesting stuff. I’ll link in all the links where you can get into thorough history behind the Dallas Reunion Tower.

The Reunion tower was completed on February 2, 1978 by The Beck Group. It was open to public on April 15, 1978. The Dallas tower was the idea of billionaire Ray L. Hunt of Hunt Realty Investments and John Scovell, founder and chairman of the Woodbine Development Corporation.

The area where the tower is erected falls into the Reunion District. The district got its name when french, belgian and swiss settled in a place that we now call west oak cliff and those settlers named it, La Reunion. John Scovell, fascinated by the La Reunion named the tower – Reunion Tower.

The tower wasn’t alwaays open to the public. It was closed when it under went renovations. For instance, It was closed for renovations starting in November of 2007 and it reopened in 2013 with the Geo-Deck. Oh and did you know, in the beginning, the tower even hosted sports radio station KOAX-FM (now KRLD-FM)

Today, the Reunion Tower is a part of Hyatt Regency Complex.

Refer to Downtown Dallas Park for more info.

The Dallas Reunion Tower – Special Attractions

GeO-Deck

Geo-Deck was included after the renovation work that lasted from 2007 to 2013. The GeO-Deck enclosed a geodesic pattern. The GeO-Deck or the observation deck includes the outer observation deck and the inner observation deck.

Inner deck has all the seating for you to enjoy the view. Whereas, the outer observation deck makes you realize that you are really THAT high from the ground as you feel the gush of the Dallas air, and all those mega structure of the city don’t appear that huge. Don’t worry, you’ll be safe, there are bars and a wall the goes up to your waist and above, so there’s no danger.

Photo : https://www.expedia.com/

The outer deck has binoculars so you can use them to view the parts of the city from 470 ft. high. (There’ll be hints presents to let you know what you’ll find and where to look for them.)

The inner observation deck is equipped with interactive touch screens. They offer live views from the camera’s on the Ball tower. You can have a look at the famous landmarks, restaurants, museums, etc in real time. So, it’s basically like what you would see when on the outer observation deck, but it’s just that you can now see all that on a screen from the real time camera feed. (Sorry to water it down haha but yeah there’s zoom in and zoom out feauture, you’ll enjoy exploring the city with it!)

**Please note, that if you plan on visiting the GeO-Deck on Tuesday, December 31st, the outer ring will be closed due to fireworks installation for the NYE**

Lights

Over the tower’s geodesic design, the tower has huge bright 259 LED lights. Each one of those lights is individally programmable, giving it the ability to project different animations or showcase certain colors during a certain event.

For instance, the globe is illuminate with festive fun animations during the holiday season. And the lights turn all green for St. Patricks, and red, white and blue for the partiotic events.
