What started with a humble beginning in the year 1972 with only 113 participants and 26.2 mile run around the Memorial park under Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) now hosts two World Athlectics Gold Labeled events – Chevron Houston Marathon and Armaco Houston Half Marathon.

Chevron Houston Marathon has become one of those Marathons that can qualify you for the Boston Marathon or even the Olympics! The Aramco Houston Half Marathon has hosted more than 15 U.S. Half Marathon Championships.

The flat course of the Marathon leads the runner through the majestic city of Houston, showcasing the iconic sities that makes Houston, Houston.

The Run For A Reason (RFAR) charity program has raised more than $36 million for local charities, children’s hospitals, schools, etc! Race weekend generates over $50 million in economic boost for the region annually!

The RFAR, the local businesses and other runners continue to raise money for different charities through this Marathon.

With hunderds of thousands of people (including spectators and volunteers) attending the Marathon, the planning for the execution of the race begins a year prior to the race date.

Why Do People Run A Marathon?

People choose to run marathon for a couple reasons –

  • To win the prize money
  • To qualify for other marathons (for instance – Boston Marathon, Olympics)
  • To challenge themselves to achieve a healthier life
  • To beat thier personal bests from the past marathons, etc.

Out of 30,000+ running the Marathon, some will aim for the first place. Texaslyf is cheering for them!

But many of those 30,000+ runners will be running for a far greater purpose that much greater than any prize – Some of them will be running for loved ones they lost. Some of them will be running for raising money for a precious cause. Some of them will run together as a famiy cheering each other on making deeper bonds and precious beautiful memories.

It truly has become a tradition to run this Marathon for many families in Houston and even for familes across the United States and around the world, with many joining the legacy – runners who have run the marathon for more than 10 years straight!
